Dark Innovatory Factory is a design studio in Coimbatore, in the south of India. We make collectible furniture and lighting, and this site is our archive: each piece is filed as a numbered specimen, with its materials and the notes behind it.
About
The work sits somewhere between furniture and sculpture. Some pieces begin as digital models and are shaped by simulation; others are worked out in the material first. Either way we treat the making as part of the design, and we spend a lot of time on the material itself: how a timber takes a finish, how a cast alloy holds a shape, how glass moves when it is heated.
In September 2026 we are showing the CHRONOS Edition, two works developed together, the Chronos Chair and the Chronos Floor Lamp, at Design Democracy in Hyderabad. The rest of the archive is here to browse: what each piece is made of, what stage it has reached, and whether it can be commissioned.
Read the evolutionThe thinking
I approach design through the relationship between form, function, material and detail, allowing each to shape the other. I am particularly interested in how different materials connect, contrast and come together through geometry, pattern and carefully resolved junctions. For me, finish is never just an outer layer applied to a completed object. The material itself—its texture, weight, tactility, colour and the way it is detailed—should become part of the form and character of the object. The final experience should come from the material being integral to the design, rather than simply decorating its surface.
