Ebonized White Oak
The white oak in the CHRONOS Edition gets its colour from a chemical reaction rather than a coat of anything. We make a solution from vinegar and steel wool and apply it to the timber. The iron in the solution reacts with the tannin that oak naturally contains, and the wood turns black from within.
Because the colour is in the wood and not on it, the grain and the texture are still there to see and to touch. The volumes read as oak that has changed, not oak that has been covered up.
- The oak is not painted or stained black. A solution made from vinegar and steel wool reacts with the tannin in the wood and the timber itself darkens, so the grain and texture stay visible.
